“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
That is my favourite quotation from Martin Luther King Jr. It stays stuck in my gmail account, part of my signature.
I wouldn’t say that Martin Luther King Jr is very influential in my life. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t consider myself even remotely close to being an expert on Martin Luther King Jr. As far as I know, he was a Baptist, civil rights activist, the story behind U2’s ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ Martin Luther King Jr was the man behind the ‘I have A Dream’ speech, the youngest to ever receive the Nobel Prize and was gunned down on April 4, 1968. And that is Martin Luther King.
And so, we celebrate the man to remember Martin Luther King Jr greatness, activism and influence. But others never get it. Why greatness has to be celebrated. A bomb was discovered at the route of the Martin Luther King Jr march in Spokane. Workers at the site reported a suspicious package. A bomb disposal unit was called to the site. They neutralized it with a robot. Thank God nobody was hurt in the incident.
The bomb was an improvised devised and was inside a backpack. The FBI said that it contained destructive devised capable of causing multiple casualties. The FBI is offering a reward of $20,000 for anyone who can give information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people found Monday.
Up to now, the adversaries of democracy have a way of showing their angst against what is just. Maybe they are just upset that although they had silenced Martin Luther King Jr, democracy would continue to fight.
Well, that’s what happened during the Martin Luther King Jr celebration. We sure hope that celebrations in years to come are peaceful- just a celebration of greatness, activism and influence of Martin Luther King Jr.
